Health systems, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, can increase the impact of incentive-based interventions by using them to improve treatment engagement for a range of psychiatric disorders, adjusting for specific clinical contexts, incorporating techniques from behavioral economics, and partnering with corporations.

Incentive-based interventions are effective, but thus far have had only limited impact. This paper proposes four ways to increase the impact and reach of incentive-based interventions using lessons gleaned from the authors' experiences implementing these interventions at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
