What is it about?

This is a study of psychiatric co-morbidities in the Fragile X-associated tremor-ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), an illness specific to the premutation carriers of Fragile X. These patients have characteristic neuropsychiatric findings that progress over time.

Why is it important?

FXTAS patients often manifest a frontal-subcortical dementia plus other psychiatric co-morbidity. FXTAS should be considered as a diagnosis in dementia with a movement disorder in patients with other Fragile X illnesses in their pedigree.

Perspectives

This is one of the first studies of early and middle stage FXTAS, showing that psychiatric co-morbidity is common, even in those premutation carriers yet to develop a full dementia syndrome.
