What is it about?

One of the main barriers of people seeking treatment for their mental health challenges is stigma. In this article, I explain many things we can do to reduce stigma. Although the article is written for healthcare practitioners in mind (psychiatrists, psychologist, social workers, etc.), people in many types of organizations can benefit from the practical suggestions.

Why is it important?

Did you know that you might inadvertently be doing or saying things that increase mental health stigma? We all have mental health, and we should all be concerned with how to help ourselves and others be mentally healthy. This article explores ways to do that by combatting the stigma created by policies, laws, language, and behaviors.

Perspectives

Combatting mental health stigma is both a professional and personal passion project for me. I've been studying stigma in a wide variety of ways for almost 30 years, and I've had my own difficult journeys with mental health. This article can help us all be more aware of how to dismantle stigma so that we can grow together as a healthy society.
