What is it about?

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are those that are present during pregnancy and up to a year after childbirth. They are the most common complication of childbirth. When untreated, they are associated with complications such as preterm birth and cesarean sections, as well as with severe consequences such as suicide in mothers and altered emotional and cognitive development in children. This article reviews screening, assessment and management of these disorders. This includes an overview of suicide risk assessment, as well as both medication and non-medication-based treatment options that are compatible with both pregnancy and breastfeeding.
