What is it about?
El Niño (a high phase of sea surface temperature in the equatorial eastern Pacific) influences mid-latitude atmospheric circulation through the modulation of the convection in the tropics. In this research, we investigated the mechanisms.

Why is it important?
There are two famous patterns of mid-latitude atmospheric circulation during El Niño. One of them is the western Pacific (WP) pattern characterized by north-south dipole of height anomalies and the other is Pacific-North American (PNA) pattern characterized by the wave train from Hawaii to the western Atlantic via North Ameria. These two patterns, WP and PNA, are the causes of abnormal weather in East Asia and North America. But, the excitation mechanisms of WP and PNA during El Niño, especially WP, remain open research problems. Therefore, this research is important to understand and forecast the influences on the climate.
