What is it about?
Pterygium is a fibrovascular disease without known pathogenetic mechanism. SPARC Is a matrix protein that is upregulated in this disease. There may be remodeling of the ocular surface tissue, which is dependent on enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinases. This article explain the possible disturbances in these molecular systems.
