What is it about?

Some tear proteins are disturbed when patients instill glaucoma eyedrops chronically. This include the rise of inflammation regulators like S100A8 proteins, and also scafolding protein 14-3-3 isoforms.

Why is it important?

Increased inflammation may predispose to fibrosis: leading to poor outcomes in glaucoma surgery later. Increased ocular surface inflammation leads to symptoms of dry eye and likely poor compliance to glaucoma medications, leading to progression of glaucoma and loss of eyesight.

Perspectives

14-3-3 protein is important for recognition of ocular surface disease in glaucoma patients.
