What is it about?
This paper examines the mechanisms how frequent viral infections affect airway remodeling. Airway remodeling is a process associated with enhanced fibrosis and reductions in pulmonary capacity. We demonstrate the role of an innate inflammatory pathway in epithelial cells is an important contributor to the expansion of pro-fibrotic fibroblasts. We demonstrate the therapeutic of small molecule inhibitors of BRD4 to block airway remodeling. These compounds may be used in future therapeutic approaches to modify pathological responses to airborne pathogen exposures.
