What is it about?

Non-communicable respiratory diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are some of the commonest diseases however our knowledge about these conditions is limited in poor regions of the world like those seen in sub-Saharan Africa. We did a study of the burden of these diseases in Malawi, one of the World's and Africa's poorest countries. We found that over 40% of the adults included in our study had abnormalities in their lung function and levels of exposure to air pollution that were well beyond those considered safe by the World Health Organisation. These findings strongly support the case for a substantial step-up in efforts to prevent and treat non-communicable respiratory diseases in Malawi and other sub-Saharan African countries.
