What is it about?

This publication is a chapter of my recently published book Re-envisioning Theodore: Theodore of Mopsuestia's Biblical Exegesis in his Catechetical Homilies. It presents a comparative analysis of parallel exegetical passages in Theodore's Homilies and Commentaries.

Why is it important?

It incorporates Theodore's understudied homiletic interpretation of Scripture into contemporary scholarship on Theodore. The chapter shows that in his Homilies, Theodore is less interested in the setting of the biblical text, as he does in his commentaries on the Bible. In the Homilies, he develops the 'doctrinal' exegesis, drawing on his doctrinal teaching while interpreting Scripture. His exegesis at times deviates from the historia of the biblical text because of rhetorical reasons (e.g., his use of the stylistic figure of prosopopoeia).

Perspectives

Writing a comparative analysis of Theodore's biblical interpretation in two genres, homilies, and commentaries, changed my perspective on his biblical exegesis and showed that he is not a slave of his own exegetical methodology but a creative preacher and exegete.
