What is it about?

Sometimes it is impossible to understand what St Paul is saying because we don't have enough background. This essay proposes that a text hidden beneath the surface of another text (itself rediscovered in 1883) provides the background to one of Paul's most puzzling statements - the suggestion that he is 'still preaching circumcision'.

Why is it important?

The New Testament seems, on a few occasions, to reference a document or documents that were authoritative for the first Christians but which have long since become lost. This essay opens up the possibility that one such document has now come to light. If this is the case, it should provide a background that opens up understanding of a wide range of other New Testament texts, including the letters of Paul.

Perspectives

I hope this essay will provoke greater curiosity about what might lie beneath the surface of the Didache, also known as, The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles.
