What is it about?

This is a survey of libraries at Jesuit colleges and houses from the foundation of the Society through the present. describing how collection practices developed over the centuries. It also considers what happened during the suppression (1757/74-1814). The focus is global throughout and briefly considers 21st century developments.

Why is it important?

This is the only global survey of Jesuit libraries from the 16th through the 21st centuries.

Perspectives

This in part highlights my own research (see www.jesuit-libraries.com), but is designed to cover as much of the history of Jesuit libraries as possible. That means it looks at the educational and developmental value of the institutions, considers questions of preservation and loss, and is deliberately comparative in geographical as well as chronological scope.
