What is it about?

Trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people face discrimination in many areas of life. This is a result of systemic oppression (like unfair treatment in jobs) and everyday biases, which has a big impact on their mental and physical health. So, it is important to understand the problems they face in daily life and how these experiences affect them. This book chapter covers how this unfair treatment affects their mental health and the challenges they face in being accepted. It also looks at their experiences with mental health professionals.

Why is it important?

Research shows that TGNC students often experience bullying, harassment, and feelings of being left out. Many students feel the need to hide their gender identity or sexuality. They struggle with campus rules and surveys that do not recognize their gender identity. This can lead to isolation and increase the chances of dropping out of school. It can also contribute to mental health issues, including self harm and suicide attempts. Family rejection also greatly increases the risk of mental health problems. Studies show that many mental health professionals are not well prepared to help TGNC clients. TGNC clients often have to teach their therapists about their issues and prefer therapists who respect their gender identity without making it the main focus. KEY TAKEAWAY: It is important to recognize the struggles of TGNC people and develop strategies to address their issues. Implementing an inclusive curriculum, training educational staff, and providing support can make a big difference. Using gender neutral terms and preventing discrimination can help build a better society. These practices will help create a fair and welcoming environment for everyone. This research relates to the following Sustainable Development Goals: • SDG 5: Gender Equality • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being • SDG 4: Quality Education • SDG 10: Reduced Inequality • SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
