What is it about?

Cyberspace is embedded in physical structures and virtual networks. This creates a geopolitics of cyberspace which shapes, and is shaped, by the major state and non-state actors. Diplomats need to understand this to manage cyber conflicts and disputes.

Why is it important?

We have too long left cyberspace to technicians, fooled by its apparently virtual nature. But cyberspace has its own geopolitics which will decide its future development and stability. If we do no understand this we cannot manage the geopolitical challenges it poses.

Perspectives

My background as a former diplomat gave me a different perspective from that of technicians and academics. I enjoyed exploring the ways states interact with each other, and with other non-state actors, and how a diplomatic approach can be developed to managing these interactions.
