Why is it important?

The book's ambition is to offer the first comprehensive overview of language diversity for the entire territory of the Habsburg Monarchy, placing emphasis on the experiences and encounters at urban frontiers and the linguistic policies and practices in transition.

Perspectives

This book approaches this topic critically, informed by recent scholarship in Habsburg studies that focus on aspects that actually bound the empire’s diverse population together, as well as of the dangers of equating historical precedents and their contemporary applicability.
