What is it about?

This is a study of fluctuations in emotions as part of small learning events in a science class where we show how the intensity of emotion and the achievement of understanding scientific knowledge are interrelated.

Why is it important?

Educators need to understand better the interrelationships between emotional experiences and learning in natural classroom contexts, so that teaching and learning can be planned with both emotion and cognition in mind.

Perspectives

This chapter is important because it shows the influence of emotional intensity on learning. It also illustrates some innovative research methods where I have analysed facial and bodily actions to understand emotional fluctuations during a period of silent, online learning.
