What is it about?

Argentine Patagonia has a dry climate, which makes it difficult to obtain water for drinking and farming. But this problem can be an opportunity to teach science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) as well as sustainable development goals (SDGs). Students can use this knowledge to solve real world problems. However, more research is needed to understand how to implement this in different school settings. This study focused on integrating STEAM education with SDGs through project based learning. It was performed at a rural school in Patagonia with 13 year old students. They designed, built, and set up a solar powered irrigation system to solve the region’s water problem.

Why is it important?

Students used concepts from mathematics, physics, and sustainability to build the system. This helped them understand difficult concepts more easily. Schools should use this method to prepare students for real life challenges. Students faced problems like limited sunlight and a low budget, which prevented them from testing their irrigation system in all seasons. But these limitations also forced them to think creatively and make smart decisions. GeoGebra, a mathematical modeling tool, was an important part of the project. It allowed students to create a two dimensional model of the solar panel support, helping them in understanding, building, and assembling it. Since students worked in teams, they could collaborate and learn from each other. This was crucial for developing critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills. These skills are important for students’ success in different aspects of their lives. KEY TAKEAWAY: Students learn a lot when project based learning, math modeling, and outdoor STEAM education are combined. They apply what they learn to solve sustainability issues through renewable energy projects. These find-ings could help educators and policymakers make STEAM education more relevant to the real world. This research relates to the following Sustainable Development Goals: • SDG 4: Quality Education • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy • SDG 13: Climate Action • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
