What is it about?
Conceptualized as liberty as non-domination, neo-Roman republicanism has inspired not only Western but also Northeast Asian political theorists. However, neo-Roman republican ideas in Northeast Asian countries continue to face serious conceptual and political challenges, which scholarly literature on both republicanism and on East Asian politics has largely failed to confront. The interview with Philip Pettit, which was held on 21st May, 2021, addresses these challenges. The first section provides a conceptual overview of his neo-Roman republicanism, then the second section deals with the hard questions that can be pressed against Pettit’s neo-Roman republicanism. In the final section, we consider how his neo-Roman republicanism fits with the current issues including the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic.
