Contrastive Pragmatics in a Diachronic Perspective: Insights from Othello

What is it about?

Languages may be compared and contrasted in space and time. Translations of Shakespeare show how cultures differ in the ways of expressing meanings, addressing others and displaying emotions. Based on German, Finnish, Swedish and Polish translations of Othello from the nineteenth and twentieth century our paper shows that these are sensitive to the context of society and culture.
