What is it about?
The ethnicity concept has been used increasingly to describe politics and society around the world. In the case of Sindh and Pakistan, I show that the concept was employed only from the 1980s. I look at the different ideas that framed Sindh earlier, and their relationship to politics in Sindh and Pakistan.

Why is it important?
While the ideas of "nation" and "religion" have been well-studied, ethnicity has received less attention. I also call for an examination of the use of the ethnicity concept globally from the second half of the twentieth century.
