What is it about?

Animal welfare improves when livestock farming is viewed as a sustainable practice. But what is sustainability. We interpret the concept of sustainability as embedded in a normative practice approach to farming.

Why is it important?

The concept of sustaibality is broad and somewhat vague and is interpreted differently, depending on whose perspective one chooses. In this article the different stakeholder perspectives are put into perspective on the basis of a so-called normative practice approach (that initially was developed by Jochemsen and Glas for medical practice). There are conditioning, qualifying and foundational norms for livestock farming. Distinguishing them helps to organize the discussion

Perspectives

This approach is important because it helps to avoid classical black/white or either/or discussions about farming, for instance, the tension between a capitalist/economic and an ecological/sustainable aproach to livestock farming.
