What is it about?
We discuss the automatic recognition of objects, the materials they are made of, and of depiction style. We provide evidence that artwork challenges automation in deep ways._x000D_ _x000D_ The paper summaries previous work on object recognition. It includes new intitial results regarding the problems for recognising material stuff. A new method to recognise depiction is presented._x000D_ _x000D_ We conclude that current automation is premised on incorrect assumptions that lead to failure. Futher, that_x000D_ art theory assists automation by providing pointers on how to correct these underlying assumptions.
