What is it about?

The impact of probiotics on our daily lives is mind-blowing. Probiotics impact every facet and person in a unique setting. It is well known that mental health is the most important aspect of someone’s life. Unfortunately, the current status of mental health diseases is alarming and affects one billion individuals globally. Here, we documented the potential role of probiotics (psychobiotics) in the treatment and prevention of mental diseases like stress, anxiety, depression, etc. The PRISMA protocol was followed to collect data and materials for this article. The results showed potential positive attributes to help with mental health disorders. Although the experimental evidence is still not enough, what has been obtained so far clearly indicates their potential value and bright future. Being an attractive topic for researchers in the medical, microbiology, drug, neurology, etc. fields, this systematic review article will help to understand the concepts of probiotics, psychobiotics, gut-brain axis, and neurological disorders and their associations.

Why is it important?

The growing interest of researchers in psychobiotics underpin their importance. It is crucial for understanding the complex relationship between the gut microbiome and mental health. Deciphering this role can open new avenues for non-pharmacological interventions, provides more personalized treatments, and offers cost-effective strategies to manage mental health conditions. Further investigation into the potential mechanisms and efficacy of psychobiotics can help expand treatment options, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the understanding of the mind-gut connection.

Perspectives

Deciphering the role of probiotics in mental health through psychobiotics represents an exciting and evolving area of research with significant potential. While there is considerable promise in using probiotics to support mental well-being, the field is still developing, and many questions remain about how, when, and for whom psychobiotics may be most effective. Continued research, large-scale clinical trials, and better understanding of the gut-brain connection will be key to fully unlocking the potential of psychobiotics as a viable mental health treatment. This systematic literature review offer a valuable insights into how probiotics play a role in mental health management.
