What is it about?
The protection of civilians became increasingly important after the end of hte cold war. Staring in 2000, United Nations peacekeeping operations were mandated to begin protecting civiliand from immeidate threats. Over the last twenty years, great progress has been made in when and how we protect civilians but there is still a major gap on what peacekeepers are being asked to do and what they are capable of doing.

Why is it important?
It is likely that we will only see more cases will protecting civilians is the main goal or peace operations. The more time spent reflecting of leassons learned form the past and making ourselves aware of challenges we face now and might face in the future, will be key in making sure protection mandates are realistic and achieveable
