What is it about?

China’s diplomacy is at the centre of the controversy about its role in international politics. The increasing impact that a more powerful and confident China is having on the rest of the world is an established fact, and its interaction with the world provides a window on how a rising China practices diplomacy.

Why is it important?

Academic debates on China's diplomacy with contributions from both China and the West are rare in diplomatic studies and international relations. This collection of original research articles and essays, 60 per cent from China and 40 percent from the West, debate the role of China's diplomacy from contrasting perspectives.

Perspectives

Co-editing this special essay with Paul Sharp (University of Minnesota) and Zhang Qingmin (Peking University) was, in a sense, a meeting of two academic worlds. We accomplished the mission of a peer-reviewed collaborative special issue with contributions by academics working in very different academic traditions.
