Why is it important?

This study highlights the often-overlooked role of North Africa in the history of medicine. By focusing on the doctor Caelius Aurelianus and his connections to a town in present-day Tunisia, it shows how medical knowledge developed outside the traditional centers of the Roman world. It offers a fresh perspective on medicine at the end of antiquity and helps broaden our understanding of where and how medical ideas circulated.

Perspectives

We wrote this article as a collaboration between two scholars with different backgrounds: one a philologist, the other an archaeologist. By bringing together textual analysis and archaeological context from Tunisia, we enjoyed exploring the world of the late antique doctor Caelius Aurelianus from more than one angle. Working together allowed us to connect medical writings with the real places and societies in which they were produced, offering a richer picture of medicine at the end of antiquity.
