What is it about?

The conference "Meteorology Beyond Borders - Ancient and Modern Reflections" took place in 2022. Academics from around the world presented their studies of Ancient Meteorology. The organizers also invited two scientists - a meteorologist and an astronomer (astronomical elements are common in Ancient Meteorology) to provide modern context. The chapter "Modern Meteorology" compares and contrasts the modern meteorological experience with various aspects of Ancient Meteorology as presented in the conference.

Why is it important?

"Meteorology Beyond Borders" was a major conference with a variety of researchers who are experts in Ancient Meteorology. Unusually, a modern meteorologist (and a modern astronomer) were also present. Their role was to provide modern context that would contribute to a better understanding of some of the issues involved in the study of Ancient Meteorology.

Perspectives

As a meteorologist, I have long been interested in the history of meteorology, from the Ancients through to modern times. Surprisingly, many of the Ancients are present in philately (another of my interests). See https://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/dev/hillger/ancient.htm. The conference opened up new vistas for me in the world of Ancient Meteorology, and I hope that in turn the academic participants gained some appreciation of the modern meteorological experience, and that such context might be useful in their future work. I believe that the conference was improved by the synergy thus established.
