What is it about?

Tracing its origins to the Age of Enlightenment, the article shows how the scholarly journal developed, the roles it assumed, and how it functioned as a product of negotiations between actors in academia and the publishing industry. Considering the genre’s ever-changing character, the scholarly journal is far from the stable, apolitical pillar of academia that some imagine it to be.

Why is it important?

Using recent findings in periodical studies, the article helps to establish the humanities journal as a legitimate research subject. It also incorporates a historical perspective to avoid the present-focused bias of many existing studies.

Perspectives

I hope this article demonstrates the value of analyzing a humanities journal within its broader context and offers a set of concepts and theories to guide future research in this area.
