What is it about?

Every school district needs a strategic plan to guide it through the next 5 years. Without a strategic plan, the district may act like one of its hyperactive students, jumping from one thing to the next. School districts need to have a plan to adapt to changing conditions that is more than just the normal striving to improve.

Why is it important?

There are numerous evolving challenges, including underachieving students, aging facilities, technological advancements, financial disruptions, issues of inclusion and equity, changing demographics, and aging facilities that require innovative responses.

Perspectives

I have seen strategic plans that merely inform people that they will make improvements in ways that are typically expected. Then there are strategic plans that are overly ambitious, which would require vast amounts of resources in time to monitor progress. Strategic plans should incorporate elements of innovation to move beyond standard routines.
