What is it about?

'Autofiction' is the story of a person's life told by themselves, with a fictional twist. It has been practised for centuries, but the concept, theorised only fifty years ago, is still widely debated. This chapter explores its history and defines its boundaries, highlighting how it differs from similar literary forms, the various ways an author can reveal their identity, and the different subcategories of autofiction that can be distinguished based on its varying degrees of fiction.
