What is it about?

English is used globally by people from diverse backgrounds, yet English teaching still focuses on native speaker norms and cultures. This paper argues for teaching approaches that reflect the real-world diversity of English use. By embracing varied ways of speaking English and helping learners see themselves as confident users, we can make English education more inclusive and practical for global communication.

Why is it important?

This perspective is timely as English is increasingly used as a global language in diverse contexts. By shifting the focus to the real-world diversity of English use, this approach aims to empower learners to communicate confidently and adaptively in global settings reflecting the multicultural realities of its use.

Perspectives

Writing this article gave me the opportunity to reflect on the gap between how English is taught and how it is actually used in the real world. My hope is that this piece encourages educators to help learners to see themselves as confident, legitimate users of English, no matter their background.
