What is it about?
How did medieval mapmakers understand the Earth? This article explores how maps and diagrams visualised 'earth' within a framework of the four elements, and how it was understood as both physical matter and an idea. It investigates how medieval Europe conceived of 'earth' as having multiple meanings: as an element, a cosmic sphere, the globe, dry land and the home of humanity.
