Chapter 1 of “Sacred Medieval Objects and Their Afterlives in Scandinavia” addresses how surviving remnants of medieval church culture were perceived in a Scandinavian past and the many factors that influence survival into the present. It probes the shifting status and changing physical form of sacred objects that survive in considerable numbers across Scandinavia.

Why is it important?

As a whole, this collaborative volume highlights the diversity of theoretical and practical approaches to sacred medieval religious objects. Authors from 10 separate disciplines shed new light on the making, ageing and display of sacred objects that were central to medieval Christianity. It brings together new findings related to the transformations of these objects since the Reformations in the Scandinavian countries.
