What is it about?
EU integration works through legal integration. The Rule of Law is the fundamental principle for Member States and candidates for accession alike. Reforms in the judiciary are necessary for aligning the situation with European standards thereby creating the trust which is necessary for mutual recognition and cooperation. The chapter illustrates the evolution of reforms in the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Why is it important?
An independent judiciary is fundamental for a sustainable and democratic society. It is an important precondition for accession to the EU. BiH is a very complex State system which is reflected in the complicated institutional structures which include the judiciary.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a pleasure as I have spent two years in the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina and seen things from the inside.
