What is it about?

This paper examines the recent proliferation of Latinx podcasts from the American West. The West has always been regarded as a complex, urban and diverse space, and Latinxs have been long rooted to the territory, but their voices have often been dismissed. This article explores the potential of podcasting as a new and more accessible medium that may incorporate testimonies of historically othered segments of the population, like Latinxs. In addition, it observes how the myth of the West is revised in these podcasts.

Why is it important?

This paper analyzes Latinx podcasts, which have received little critical attention. While podcasting is a well-established medium and is being analyzed by researchers belonging to multiple disciplines, Latinx podcasts tend to remain outside of this scholarly attention. This chapter explores not only the overall development and evolution of numerous podcasts, but it takes Locatora Radio as a specific example that illustrates the new direction taken by the podcasting industry. Another innovative aspect of this paper is that it situates these podcasts within the cultural productions of the American West.

Perspectives

I believe this chapter makes an important contribution to both Podast Studies and research on the American West. The Latinx podcasts presented in this paper are not only illustrative of the Latinx population, but their claims and worries remain relevant beyond their geographical context and are worth knowing. In addition, it is essential to consider how the mythical imaginary of the West continues to permeate new cultural forms.
