What is it about?

The article examines a collection of poems preserved on a sheet now bound in a manuscript at the Austrian National Library. The collection was created to honor the recent death of the Greek scholar Theodore Gaza (Theodoros Gazes). Greek and Latin poems by young poets active in early modern Italy, including the renowned Agnolo Poliziano, are featured in this collection, which was commissioned by Demetrios Chalkondyles upon his arrival in Florence.

Why is it important?

My article explains why and how a collection of poems in classical languages was compiled during the Italian Renaissance.

Perspectives

The focus is on understanding how poems create larger narratives when gathered into collections, and how these literary collections became a tool for both personal and political memory in the Italian Renaissance.
