What is it about?

Katakalon's verse encomium for emperor John V Palaiologos is a brilliant example of praise and critique of imperial conduct in a period of deep crisis for the Byzantine empire. What makes this work particulalry interesting is the fact that this encomium was written in the provinces by an otherwise unknown poet, therefore it offers an unique insight into the thoughts and concerns of the people living on the fringes of the empire, away from the capital Constantinople.
