What is it about?
Balinese Muslim communities have developed their own performing arts, nurtured in their social and cultural relationships with their Hindu rulers (puri) and neighbors. The article describes how puri have often provided performance opportunities through which Muslim Balinese can display their cultural identity and enhance their presence in the community, while their presence can also benefit puri by highlighting their power and history. The performing arts have not only enabled and sustained such reciprocal relationships, but have also strengthened social ties within the neighborhood and cultivated a sense of local community as a whole.
