What is it about?
This chapter examines the third wave of Egyptian Pentecostalism, or the neo-Charismatic wave, starting from its emergence in the 1980s until the present time. It also offers a brief historical background on the second wave of Pentecostalism, or the Charismatic Renewal in the mainline churches in Egypt, in order to situate permutations of the third wave within the broader historical context of the preceding developments. The Egyptian neo-Charismatic movements have emerged as strong indigenous revivals in Upper Egypt and Cairo producing independent entities afterward, including ministries and churches who are not affiliated with any Egyptian classical Pentecostal or Charismatic/non-Charismatic mainline denominations. This chapter traces these indigenous revivals and the major entities produced through them, and highlights prominent leaders, whose ministries and writings have formulated the third wave of Egyptian Pentecostalism. Admittedly, this chapter does not cover all the third wave’s entities in Egypt, but rather it focuses on the major third-wave ministries and churches playing a central role in forming the Egyptian neo-Charismatic wave. The Call of the Kingdom movement, Rivers of Life Ministry founded by Father Daniel El-Baramosy, the Holy Synod of Saint Athanasius Congregation founded by Archbishop Maximus the First, and New Life Ministry founded by Nader Yassa are among the major third-wave entities that will be examined in this chapter.
