What is it about?
This research uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore what it is like to look at a painting. It presents 12 participants' accounts of viewing Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez. The experience of sharing eye contract with depicted figures is considered in detail. The participants describe how sensations of gazing and being gazed at impact their viewing experience and their interpretations of the painting.
