What is it about?

On the death of Aldus Manutius in February 1515, Marin Sanudo praised him as a teacher and scholar, highlighting his Latin and Greek editions. This article considers the rationale for the esteem shown by Sanudo and his contemporaries for Aldus as an outstanding scholar-printer in the classical languages. However. Sanudo omits any mention of Aldus's printing in Italian, which made a major contribution to the rise of vernacular scholarship.
