What is it about?
The article provides a technical and legal analysis of the International Court of Justice's 2021 ruling in the maritime boundary delimitation case between Somalia and Kenya with a particular focus on transparency and predictability. The article reverse-engineers the ICJ's Judgment using recent high-resolution satellite imagery. The Court's decision to reply on a relatively small-scale chart based on surveys well over 50 years old resulted in some problematic choices of base points which have legal, practical and geopolitical consequences.
