What is it about?

Shipping can be made safer and pollute less when states inspect ships that enter their ports to ensure they comply with legal standards. Autonomous ship inspection robots with artificial intelligence capabilities are currently being developed that can make such inspections easier and more rigorous. This article examines how these new technologies can be incorporated into laws governing inspection of ships. While in principle applicable globally, the article focuses on the European Union.
