What is it about?

Treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) vary widely. Treatments are basically determined by tumor number, tumor size, liver function, and performance status. No studies have evaluated the long-term prognosis depending on tumor location. In order to investigate the appropriate treatment strategies, the treatment efficacy of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for HCC was evaluated by tumor location, central versus peripheral.

Why is it important?

TACE for HCCs in the peripheral zone of the liver had a significantly better prognosis than in the central zone. Tumor location might be one of the criteria in selecting an effective treatment strategy.
