What is it about?
Complement activation is important in the pathogenesis of many different kidney diseases. We compared complement activation by measuring C5b-9 in the blood and kidney tissue of 37 patients. We found that soluble C5-b9 is a marker of recent complement activation as opposed to complement deposition in kidney tissue, which can build up over time.

Why is it important?
With the emergence of therapeutic complement inhibitors, there is a need to identify patients with complement-driven inflammation. We hope that plasma sC5b-9 is a potentially useful tool in identifying patients and conditions with recent complement activation.
