What is it about?

An overweight patron at a water slide park went on a high velocity water slide (thrill ride) and upon hitting the water was unable to walk and had severe pain in the waist. She ruptured ligaments in the waist (pelvic ring) which caused the pelvis to open like a book. This is potentially a life threatening injury as major blood vessels may burst. Deficiencies at the water park in terms of emergency equipment was highlighted. It is recommended that overweight patients should avoid high velocity water slides.

Why is it important?

The public is unaware of the increased risk an overweight person has on going on a high velocity slide. The author had another patient that had the same injury from the same slide which resulted in death.

Perspectives

The case in addition to the points raised above, highlights that water parks continue to not be adequately monitored and inadequately equipped for an emergency, even in places that had known major injuries at the park. Documentation of injuries and reporting of injuries at the parks are also grossly inadequate.
