What is it about?
We have shown that miR-301a is directly targeting ESR1 mRNA resulting in lower protein levels and less active ESR signalling. Importantly higher expression of miR-301a seems to promote the estrogen-independent features of breast cancer cells and leads to an enrichment of the population of tumor-initiating or cancer-stem like cells.

Why is it important?
It maps another molecular mechanism how estrogen positive breast cancer may became insensitive to the estrogen and thus do not respond to hormonal therapy.
