What is it about?
Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection is a global health burden. HBV has ten different genotypes (A-J) with different geographic distributions. Limited data are available about HBV genotyping among Egyptian blood donors, particularly in Upper Egypt. We enrolled 12000 blood donors with 1.98% HBV seroprevalence. HBV genotype D was the predominant genotype among HBsAg-positive blood donors in Upper Egypt and was in >80% of the subjects associated with a negative HBeAg serostatus.

Why is it important?
Genotype D is the most prevalent in the Middle East. However, limited data are available about HBV genotyping among Egyptian blood donors, particularly in Upper Egypt. This was examined in this study.
