What is it about?

Patients with oral lichen planus are occasionally complicated by hepatitis C. The present patient, who was aware of hepatitis C but had not received antiviral treatment for 30 years, visited to a dental clinic because of the development of oral lichen planus. Here we present a case in which antiviral therapy recommended by an oral surgeon resulted in eradication of HCV and improvement of lichen planus.

Why is it important?

Although hepatitis C can now be treated with oral antivirals, there are still untreated HCV-infected patients. Dentists serve as gatekeepers to guide untreated hepatitis patients to appropriate treatment.

Perspectives

With a view to eradicating liver cancer, dentists should recommend close examination of liver disease to patients with lichen planus and aggressive antiviral treatment to untreated hepatitis C patients.
