Why is it important?
We report for the first time the accumulation of organic molecules in the form of photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll-a and its derivatives contained en surficial sediments near active hydrothermal vent sites. It was demonstrated that some of the identified pigments have a bacterial origin.
